about
The source material is the same as I used in We Were Entangled (2018) It wa created by interaction between me making acoustic sounds and one of the Zoetic Engines I built on the Synthi 100 at the Radio Belgrade Electronic Studio in 2018. The Synthi 100 had just been resurrected by Daniel Araya (SE) and Jari Suominen (FI).
This embodies an MO which I began to investigate more than 30 years ago when I was still employed at the Studio, resulting at that time in the piece Play Me.
The Zoetic Engine consisted of three ”creatures” made by complex patching, often in ways not normally considered permissible, and involving quite a lot of nearly unstable states. The Synthi 100 is probably unique as regards the possibilities of creating such patches, both as regards complexity and the freedom to make connections between modules in ways for which they were not originally intended.
The creatures have a life of their own, thanks to their inherent instability they ”play” by themselves, but I have built them so that they are mostly rather indolent unless they receive stimuli from the outside world. A human can interact with them by sending them a sound e.g. via a microphone, or by moving a joystick touching a keyboard.
I experience them as quasi-living cohorts.
In this ZE there are three such creatures, which also animate one another to a certain extent.
We created this piece together, I animating them by playing (bassett horn), and they me hearing their responses.
In this piece I reworked the original material to (re)create a different overall form and a four-channel version. Here a stereo mix-down
A work of beautiful, pointillist guitar from Martyn Heyne, the moving songs on “Electric Intervals” are made of tiny pinpricks of sound. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 11, 2017
